I want the Art Deco look, but I’m worried that "gold" wallpaper will look like cheap, shiny tinsel.

Look for the Canvas Peel & Stick option at art deco wallpaper the fabric-like canvas texture breaks up the reflection of the gold ink, so instead of a "shiny plastic" look, you get a sophisticated, soft metallic sheen. It looks more like traditional silk-screened paper from the 20s.
