I will try to make Microsoft Money 99 into a portable app
Permalink

Sorry, I know I have beaten this issue to death.

I am going to try to make Microsoft Money 99 into a portable app myself.  Should I use a clean Win XP or Win 7 computer to try to do this.  A clean machine is pretty essential?

Does anyone know if this is just a futile effort.  If so, I should cut my losses and export everything to Quicken I guess although I dislike that program.

Any input appreciated.

Last night I dug out a Win XP machine and took all of the programs off it except the operating system. It this what a "clean machine" is?

Any input appreciated.

Hello Smorton,

The easiest place to start is with Cameyo's Online Packager if your installer is 50MB or smaller.  This requires the least amount of work.

If your installer file is larger than 50MB, you can consider upgrading from Cameyo Free to Cameyo Pro, or you can package it yourself.

A clean virtual machine is recommended for packaging.  Common software used for running virtual machines are VirtualBox (free) and VMware's Workstation Pro (commercial).

Clean generally means that only the OS has ever been installed.  Uninstalling software can leave unwanted remnants that can affect future packaging.  With a VM, you can take a snapshot of the clean VM and return to that state each time you want to create a new package.  You can do the same thing with a host system if you prefer by using imaging software or an application that allows you to roll back system changes.

As for what OS to use to create packages, it depends on the target system for the package.  Generally, you want to use the oldest OS on which the package will be deployed.  For example, if you plan to use your package on Win7, Win8, and Win8.1, you would want to package on Win7.  If your goal is to use a package on only one OS, it is best to package on a clean version of that OS.

Mule,

Would like to use on Win 7 and higher. It works on Win7, Win 8.1 but would like it to work on Win10 and would like it portable. So, install VirtualBox on Win7 and then make a new install of the program (even though I have it on the host machine?). Or install virtualbox and then run XP as a guest and install on the XP running on VirtualBox even though it is already on the host machine?

Maybe I need to study the manuals.

Program, is 408 mg if you go by the size of the CD.

Sorry for so many dumb dumb questions.

Think I have a few things figured out. Run WinXP in virtual mode on Win7 machine via VirtualBox. Make snapshot of system. Probably do this by upgrading to Cameyo pro. After Cameyo snapshot, have it make the portable app. It appears that the latest version of Cameyo is compatible with Win10.

I find these last two upgrades to be dreadful. Win 7 was a charm. I am so irritated that Microsoft develops a product and then fails to support it (Money and Win 10=big issue for many folks).

How long will Win 7 be a viable operating system. I get daily reminders that I should upgrade to Win10. Irritates the hell out of me. But I assume it will be a matter of time before it becomes unusable.

I wonder if you can use Zorin or something with windows software using some type of software that will allow you to bridge the gap.

I think all software should be a portable app if possible. What a rackett.

I am a lawyer and this may violate Microsoft license, but they can go to hell.

Thanks

SM

Update:

Easily installed Virtual Box and Win XP on Win 7. Did the capture via the download of Cameyo. Then the capture of Money 99. End result was something called: AppName.3365.cameyo. It advised me it would not auto open or run or something to that effect.

Uninstalled Virtual Box and Win XP. Reinstalled and repeated. Same result with a slightly smaller AppName.3366cameyo. Will try uploading to online packager.

Any thoughts along the way are appreciated.

Thank you.

KIPILLasa,

Don't have a clue what you are talking about except the lol, which I assume is your way of saying I am an idiot or something. I don't know if you are trying to be instructive or think this is an amateur at work who is clueless. If it is the "amateur at work who is clueless" I fully agree. I thought forums could be used by amateurs so they could gain knowledge. If not, only experts would be posting questions on forums but that doesn't make sense either because if they were experts you would think they know the answer and wouldn't need to post.

As far as I can tell you are indicating VirtualBox is a no no. Mule advised me to use VirtualBox (I think that was his recommendation).

So what gives? Is your reply intended to criticize or instruct?
