Help for reusing packages instead of capture snapshots
Permalink

Hello everyone,

Here are the details to my question:

- I captured an installation through snapshots and resulted in an exe file of around 60 MB. Let's call this package "Game.exe".

- I wanted to create a new capture modifying the package "Game.exe" files, that is deleting the old files and copying the new files, and using "Save as". The program has its files on my system and their total size is around 2 MB.

- So, I deleted all the 60 MB file from "Game.exe" and copied manually the 2 MB files and then saved the new package with "Save as". Let's call this new package "Application.exe".

I was surprised to see that the resulting file size for "Application.exe" was weight at 63 MB, and the old files didn't appear when I went to check-edit the package "Application.exe".

Is it possible the deleted files are still kept inside even though they are erased? I was hoping I would get an exe of 6 MB and not 63 MB. Is there any way for preventing this from happening?

Despite this, the program is amazing.

Thank you for your input! :)

When I use Package Editor to delete/add under the Files tab, the saved package's size adjusts accordingly.  If you share your package, I can test to see if I can reproduce your experience.

Hello, Mule,

Thanks for your interest. I have uploaded the files to this websites:

Application.exe - https://mega.co.nz/#!2IBySRoQ!A3JqCcQlRcfo-l2DghI6zqMm35hblzv4o1HUu-XvWYE

Game.exe - Pending

I recommend downloading only Application.exe, as once you check-edit the file you will notice that the only few files of around 1 MB shouldn't have resulted in an exe file of 61 MB, but for an exe of around a 1 to 6 MB.

I also uploaded the original Game.exe file for your tests from which I edited to create Application.exe when "Save as".

More info on my system:

- Windows 8.1 64b

- Firewall disabled

- No antivirus

- Latest Cameyo v2.7.1291.0 when creating both exes

Looking forward to your repply, or everyone else for the matter.

Thanks in advance!

I was unable to reproduce your experience.  I downloaded both of your packages.  Using Package Editor to open Application.exe, I dragged AMP Font Viewer 3.86 folder to the desktop and closed the package.  I opened Game.exe in Package Editor, deleted %Personal% and The escapists v1.05 folders; then I dragged AMP Font Viewer 3.86 folder from the desktop to Package Editor C_ folder and Saved as a new package, which was ~6MB.  This was done on a Win8.1 x64 VM.

Did you try deleting, adding, and Saving as more than once?  In other words, can you yourself reproduce the glitch?  Something definitely went wrong with Application.exe.  It seems the references to the deleted files are missing but the data themselves were not removed.

Hello Mule,

Thank you for your help.

Yes, I could replicate the glitch, as I have been trying in 2 different computers a few times and everytime resulted in the same filesize of 60-70 MB. One with Kaspersky Windows 7 32 bits and one with no antivirus Windows 8.1 64 bits.

Is there any way to produce a log file in order to check on what goes on? If so, I could upload this file.

Let me know what to try and I will gladly do.

Regards
